The East Side Gallery is a 1.3 km long section of the Berlin Wall, which divided East and West Germany for 28 years, representing an international memorial for freedom with approximately 106 paintings by artists from around the world.

Today hundreds of protesters gathered at the largest open-air gallery and the longest remaining stretch of the Berlin Wall to protest the demolition of a 20-meter stretch of wall set to make way for luxury condos.

Reportedly about 1.5 meters, five feet, of the gallery was taken down before the protests halted the demolition work when police deemed it was unsafe to continue.

These pictures are from my most recent trip to the gallery last year.

    1. Thanks Adam. I was surprised when I heard about it. I think it’s a loss of culture for some lux housing. I understand the economy is down and they need developments but I thought they would have worked around it somehow.
